We Clear a Bit of Land

  Good bye Old Swing Set
How much wheat are we starting with?
With the snow finally melting the swings came down on Sunday, April 28. We should easily have enough land with good sun to grow our tiny wheat field beside the slide and the monkey bars.

We were not sure how much seed we had, so we found a little science lab to weigh it for us. The scale read 738 grams, minus the 285 gram beaker. So it turns out we have 453 grams of wheat, which is roughly equal to one pound.

So, we plan to sow one pound of seed into 32 s.f. of land.

That is all we know so far.

We Plan to Grow a Loaf of Bread

Simple question: how much wheat do you need to grow a loaf of bread?

As this blog unfolds over the next few months maybe we'll come up with an answer.

Here is what we are starting with:
1 bag of hard red spring wheat (Carberry)
Our starter seed. Thanks, Farmer Bryce!
1 snowy back yard
Saturday April 20. Our Future Wheat Field.
...and a swing-set that'll have to go.

The plan: build a really simple raised bed that is 4x8 feet, and plant the wheat in it. The farmer we got the wheat from figures that 32 square feet should be more than enough to grow a loaf of bread.

That is all we know so far.
